2026 Hawai'i Watercolor Society Member' Show, "99% Transparent"
The 2026 Hawaii Watercolor Society Members’ Show, entitled “99% Transparent” refers to the requirement that the paintings are executed with 99% transparent watercolor paints. The show features 77 works by 43 member artists. The juror for the show is Sterling Edwards, an internationally renowned watermedia master artist, instructor, mentor, and author. Sterling began a second career in 1993 to pursue his passion for painting as a visual and interpretive artist. Having studied art since the age of twelve, he developed a unique and expressive style of painting that has since gained international acclaim and the respect of his peers, students, art collectors, and designers. The exhibition also features artwork from 11 notable Hawai'i glass artists from Glass Fusion Hawaiʻi exhibiting approximately 35 pieces of glass art. The inclusion of glass artwork complements the luminosity of transparent watercolor paintings. Opening Reception for the exhibition is Friday, March 6, 5-8 PM with an Awards Presentation. Closing Reception will occur on Saturday, March 28, 4-6 PM with Artist talks and presentation of the People's Choice Award. The aim of the Hawai'i Watercolor Society is to nurture and stimulate interest in watermedia through education, exhibits, and collaboration with other organizations, associations and individuals.

TOPS at Blue Note Hawaii
TOPS — musicians David Carriere, Jane Penny, Marta Cikojevic, and Riley Fleck — write timeless music that reliably threads immediacy and depth. Bury the Key, their first full-length since 2020 and with new label home Ghostly International, is a captivating reintroduction for the Montréal band: ever refined, undoubtedly masters of their melodic craft yet unafraid of evolving and testing themselves against different, at times darker tones. The album faces feelings once locked away, engaging the give-and-take between happiness, hedonism, and self- destruction. While often inhabited by fictional figures, their glowing, grooving, self-produced songs draw from personal observations: intimacy (both inside and outside the band), toxic behavior, drug use, and apocalyptic dread. When recording started, they noticed a shift and leaned in, jokingly dubbed "evil TOPS," says Penny. "We're always kind of seen as a soft band or like naive or friendly in a Canadian way, but we made it a challenge to really channel the world around us." Through the lens of a looming epoch and the clarity that comes with age, TOPS dip into a more sinister disco realm with Bury the Key, giving their soft-focus sophisti-pop a sharpened edge.

Lele Wale
World Premiere Hana KeakaWritten and Directed by MFA candidate Ikaika MendezMarch 4-8, 2026*Post Show Q&A following the Friday performanceLele Wale takes audiences on a poignant journey through the rebuilding of a community in the wake of the devastating Lahaina wildfires of August 2023. Inspired by true stories, this production serves as a tribute to the homes, businesses, landmarks, and most importantly, the cherished lives lost. As leaders, first responders, displaced families, and cultural practitioners navigate the aftermath, they wrestle with difficult questions about identity, responsibility, and the future of their beloved homeland. Through their eyes, we witness the cycles of history repeating – how colonization, commerce, and displacement have shaped the town, yet how resilience and aloha remain steadfast. “I ka wā ma mua, ka wā ma hope” (The future is found in the past). Blending mele and hula, Lele Wale explores themes of loss, healing, and the unbreakable bond between people and place. In the play, as the anniversary of the fire approaches, tensions and emotions rise, forcing the community to confront its grief, hope, and responsibility to future generations. This production is both a prayer and an offering, honoring Lahaina’s enduring spirit and the unextinguished flame of its people, ke kukui pio ʻole i ka makani Kauaʻula. ʻĀmama, ua noa, lele wale. This production will be performed in a combination of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language), Hawaiʻi Creole English (Pidgin), and English languages.Content Advisories: Grief and trauma, colonization and cultural struggles, displacement and economic hardships, use of fire symbolism.Wednesday, Mar. 4 at 7:30pmThursday, Mar. 5 at 7:30pmFriday, Mar. 6 at 7:30pm*Saturday, Mar. 7 at 7:30pmSunday, Mar. 8 at 2:00pm *post-show Q&A 3/6

Peter White at Blue Note Hawaii
Over the years, Peter White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy, he combines elements of jazz, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. In a career that spans nearly four decades, over a dozen solo recordings and countless performances, White insists that it’s the faces in the crowd and the fans that keep the experience fresh. “I’ll play a live show, and someone will come to me afterward and say, ‘Oh, I loved this CD,’ or ‘This song helped me through a bad time,’” he explains. “Or I get emails from people saying, ‘Oh, I love the way you covered one of my favorite songs on your record back in 1994.’ The idea that someone can write me an email and tell me about something I did on a record that was released fifteen years ago – you can’t buy that. That’s priceless. That’s what keeps me going – the idea that people out there really care about what I do, the idea that I’ve made a difference for someone.”

John Craigie at Blue Note Hawaii
With Opener Jenny O.For over a decade, John Craigie has made music that brings people in, not with spectacle but with sincerity and songs that feel like conversations. His new album I Swam Here, out February 6, 2026 on Zabriskie Point Records, was written and produced by Craigie and recorded between New Orleans and Astoria. Seven tracks were cut at Deslonde St Studios with musicians handpicked by Sam Doores of The Deslondes, including Howe Pearson, Max Bien Khan, Jonny Campos, and a guest appearance from Desiree Cannon. Longtime collaborator Anna Moss appears across much of the record. The remaining tracks were finished at the Rope Room in Astoria, carrying over the same spirit and palette. The cover art, painted by Brittany Schall, nods to the design of mid century samba and jazz records. The album’s singles trace the path of its making. “Fire Season,” engineered by Bart Budwig, was one of the first songs written and features Cooper Trail, Nevada Sowle, Luke Ydstie, and Jamie Greenan. “Dry Land” was reworked in Astoria after early New Orleans sessions didn’t feel right. “Edna Strange,” inspired by Marty Robbins, is the only track where Craigie plays steel string acoustic, with Max Bien Khan on nylon string leads and a trio vocal arrangement in place of Moss’s harmonies.Following 2024’s Pagan Church with TK & The Holy Know-Nothings, which spent six weeks at #1 on the Americana Albums chart, I Swam Here feels both expansive and intimate, shaped by the musical history of the Gulf Coast and the stillness of the Pacific Northwest.Craigie remains a tireless live performer, touring throughout the U.S., Europe, and Australia, appearing at festivals like Newport Folk, Pickathon, Edmonton Folk Festival, and High Sierra, and sharing the stage with artists such as Langhorne Slim, Sierra Hull, Gregory Alan Isakov, Brett Dennen, and Jack Johnson. His annual #KeepItWarm Tour donates $1 from every ticket sold to regional nonprofits, and his John Craigie On The River trips on the Tuolumne and Rogue rivers have become cherished gatherings for fans.I Swam Here is a grounded, collaborative step forward, blending New Orleans grit with Pacific Northwest quiet, and showing a songwriter still widening the world of his music.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Tickets go on sale Friday, 12/19, at 10am HST.The Brian Jonestown MassacreThe ever-evolving musical vehicle for notorious psych-rock musician Anton Newcombe, the Brian Jonestown Massacre has endured numerous phases and iterations since arriving in the mid-90s, becoming something of an independent institution in the process.Early highlights like 1996s Their Satanic Majesties Second Request showed Newcombes propensity for melding late-60s psychedelia with textured shoegaze, while later standouts like 2015s imaginary soundtrack Musique de Film Imagin took a more cerebral and experimental approach. Undoubtedly, the bands most visible period followed the release of the 2004 documentary film DIG!, which focused on the contentious relationship between Newcombe and Dandy Warhols frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor. With the film criticized by members of both groups for what they considered to be an unfair portrayal, the Brian Jonestown Massacre nonetheless survived the media attention and moved into a particularly fertile period of creativity throughout the 2010s. The bands first release of the next decade was 2022s Fire Doesnt Grow on Trees, quickly followed by 2023s Your Future Is Your Past.\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_CLUB POLICIESSeating is First Come, First Served$20 Food or Beverage Minimum Per Person Full Bar & Full Dinner Menu AvailableNo refunds or exchange. Interstellar Insights: What We’ve Learned from 3I/ATLAS
Learn what a comet from interstellar space can tell us about our solar system and what lies beyond. Comet 3I/ATLAS was only the third known object from interstellar space when it passed by our Sun last fall. Astronomer Willem Hoogendam tells us what we have learned from this rare visit. Attend in person at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa's Institute for Astronomy (pupus from 5 p.m. in the courtyard and program at 6 p.m. in the auditorium) or via Zoom at 6 p.m. Register at https://go.hawaii.edu/DwS to reserve your place and receive the Zoom link. All registrants will receive the link to the recorded talk once posted on YouTube. Hoogendam is a fourth-year National Science Foundation Fellow pursuing a PhD in Astronomy at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa's Institute for Astronomy. His research centers on transient astronomy, with a focus on supernovae, tidal disruption events, and, most recently, interstellar objects. His work has been published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Astrophysical Journal, and the Astronomical Journal.

Diamond Head Theatre presents West Side Story
Hawaiʻi’s Broadway of the Pacific, Diamond Head Theatre, presents the Tony Award–winning musical *West Side Story* for a limited engagement, March 13 through April 5 (with a possible extension). Since its groundbreaking 1957 Broadway debut, this iconic production has captivated audiences with its unforgettable score and timeless story of love, prejudice, and cultural conflict. A modern retelling of *Romeo and Juliet*, *West Side Story* follows Tony and Maria—two young lovers torn between rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, on the streets of 1950s New York City. As their romance deepens, tensions rise in a world on the brink. A cornerstone of musical theatre history, *West Side Story* first appeared on the Diamond Head Theatre stage during the 1961–62 season. More than six decades later, it returns with the passion, music, and drama that made it a legend. Early booking is strongly encouraged—this is a must-see production of the 2026 season.

Panji and the Lost Princess
Balinese Wayang Listrik (giant shadow puppets in combination with live action and gamelan orchestra)April 17-26, 2026*Pre-Show Chats at 6:45pm before Saturday performancesCo-Directed by Kristin Pauka and I Madé MojaAdapted from a traditional Balinese folktale by Ketut Wirtawan and Madé MojaPanji and the Lost Princess is a large-scale Balinese shadow puppetry performance in the tradition of wayang listrik. The story is based on the Balinese interpretation of a traditional Javanese story, and adapted to the genre of wayang listrik by Balinese master artists I Ketut Wirtawan and I Madé Moja. The show is dynamically staged with giant shadow puppetry, actors, dancers, special lighting effects, and is accompanied by a live gamelan ensemble, led by master musician I Madé Widana. The style of the production, wayang listrik (Indonesian for “electric shadows”), is a recent development in Balinese shadow puppetry that emerged in the late 1990s. What distinguishes this art form from others is the inclusion of giant screens, paintings, complex lighting, 3-dimensional effects, and dancers, as well as actors behind the screen, wearing shadow masks carved in a similar manner as traditional kulit (“leather”) puppets. Moja has staged two previous wayang listrik productions at Kennedy Theatre: Subali-Sugriwa – Battle of the Monkey Kings and The Last King of Bali. We are thrilled that he will return this season to serve as the master designer and co-director of this production.Friday, Apr. 17 at 7:30pmSaturday, Apr. 18 at 7:30pm*Friday, Apr. 24 at 7:30pmSaturday, Apr. 25 at 7:30pm*Sunday, Apr. 26 at 2:00pm*pre-show chat 4/18 & 4/25 at 6:45pm
